Chelsea's birthday party was filled with sunshine, water, smiles and surprises. She invited friends over to help her celebrate with games, prizes, cake and ice cream. Little did they know her mom was too "thrifty" to spend $20 on a real piñata. Instead I filled a Pampers wipe box with candy and sealed it with masking tape. My husband then tied a rope around it and we hung it from the basketball hoop. Not knowing how the box would hold, we started with a large plastic bat, then advanced to a styrofoam bat with more umph and finally ended with the metal bat. The kids took turns beating this thing to an unrecognizable shape, but our handy work was just too strong. The kids must have beat this box for over 30 minutes, eagerly waiting their turn to fill their goody bags. My husband cut some seams into it after the adults became bored... haha. This advanced the bursting process. By the time the box exploded, the candy inside was in pieces, but they kids didn't complain too much. More bang for my buck is usually my thinkin', but I'll reconsider a real piñata next time.
