It was my husband's birthday. We weren't doing anything special. We had friends over the night before for good food and fun conversation. Chelsea and Alex had soccer games in the morning and then we were going to spend the afternoon watching movies since it seemed to be a chilly, wet day. Chelsea also had a girl scout meeting and we stopped by a neighbor's garage sale on our way. We were greeted by a friendly dog, and went about our business. Chelsea picked out some clothing for herself, but Alex was drawn to a cool go cart. He told me if we bought it for Daddy, it would be the best present ever. He may have been right, but $1200 was not in our budget. As we were leaving, the dog followed us again. I turned around to pet him goodbye and noticed the sign dog for sale. To my surprise it was this dog for sale. I asked some questions and then Chelsea went on about how a dog would be the best present ever. I decided I needed to get Chelsea to her GS meeting and I needed to really think this through.
I thought my husband would kill me if I came home with a dog, not to mention I would be permanently banned from garage sales. My husband had no desire to have a dog, ever. The closest he's ever been to a dog was when his grandparents bought a dog and they let him name it and he played with it when he visited, a few times a year. I grew up with dogs and know the companionship they offer. We watch my uncle's dog when they travel on vacation. My husband always said, the only way we will ever get a dog is if we can have one of my uncles. His Goldens are well trained and easy to love. I wondered if this dog would make him feel the same way...
I walked Duke home for a test drive. My husband came outdoors and was NOT happy. I explained to him how friendly the dog was, never barked or jumped on strangers. He's a five year old purebred Weimaraner who needs a good home. The current owner doesn't have time for him, doesn't want to let him go, but knows it's best for the dog. Chelsea told Slater to pet him and the dog would melt his heart. It didn't quite work that way, but he gave me the go ahead to purchase him. I think his heart melted just a bit seeing the kids interact with the dog and play fetch. If only I could sweet talk the cats so easily....
